Penn Yan Aero: The Power of Experience

FAQs

What about shipping? Penn Yan Aero includes round trip shipping on all Penn Yan Aero overhauled engines from anywhere in the contiguous United States. For Penn Yan Aero overhauled engines outside of the contiguous United States, Penn Yan Aero will pay for shipping from a near point of entry (at Penn Yan Aero's discretion) to Penn Yan Aero and return to a near point of exit (at Penn Yan Aero's discretion). For Lycoming and Continental Factory engines, the customer is responsible for shipping to and from the appropriate Factory. Penn Yan Aero will provide customers with a shipping quote using our trusted and economical venders for consideration.

What's the difference between overhauled and rebuilt? The terms Rebuilt and Overhauled are specific terms with legal definitions. A "rebuilt" engine can only come from the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM), in this case, Lycoming or Continental. A “rebuilt” engine includes new and used parts and is entered into the Log Book as a "zero time" engine. An "overhauled" engine can come from any number of sources and may include some new and some overhauled parts or components. Penn Yan Aero overhauls engines to "new limits", or "zero-time" specifications. This is a good thing because it's like getting a rebuilt engine at overhaul price. Overhauled engines do not come with a "zero-time" entry in the logbook.

What is a Remanufactured or Reman engine? These terms used to be synonymous with the term rebuilt. However, the fact is that the term reman or remanufactured is not recognized by the FAA in the Federal Aviation Regulations.

What's the deal with sales tax? Penn Yan Aero is required by New York State law to either collect sales tax or a tax exempt certificate on all transactions with a New York State shipping address. There is no sales tax collected on shipments that are made out of New York State.

What has to be repairable on my core? The price is contingent upon the core engine being a normal run out, as removed, and with a repairable crankcase and crankshaft. (O-300 series also require accessory housing and sump to be repairable and 160HP O-320’s must pass 505). Engines that have had know failures may require special considerations. On Superhawk sales the propeller and propeller spacer cores also have to be repairable.

If I recently purchased new accessories and I send my engine in for OH can you use my accessories and deduct the cost from my OH price? Generally speaking, yes. However, it is important to note that the majority of time we are asked this question, what is perceived as “recently” often turn turns out to be not so recently. Our criteria is 10 hours or less.

If I request special paint for my engine can this be done? Absolutely! We have some very talented people on staff available for custom paint work. Feel free to ask your sales person for details.

Do you provide AOG service? Yes. However, it does depend on many factors. We will do everything we can to offer expedited service in AOG situations. Ask your sales person for more information.

Does PYA accept credit cards? We do accept VISA and MasterCard for most parts sales. Engine sales require certified funds via check or wire transfer.

What’s the price difference if I use my engine for overhaul or one of your cores? None!

Where are you located? Penn Yan Aero is located in Penn Yan, NY in the heart of the Finger Lakes region of Upstate New York. The airport identifier is KPEO.

Where does the name come from? The village of Penn Yan was incorporated in 1833 and was comprised of two groups of individuals. One group was from Pennsylvania and one group was known as Yankees. The Pennsylvania Yankees as they were known combined their names and settled on Penn Yan as a town name.

How much is freight going to cost? If you are in the Lower 48 States and will be overhauling your engine, the freight charges are FREE!

What if I don’t have a crate? We can send you a crate along with easy shipping instructions. We make it as simple and as easy as possible. There is an extra charge of $250 to ship the crate.

Do you balance my engine? All overhauled engines are dynamically balanced to within .2 inch ounces at no additional cost.

What is the difference between a Static and a Dynamic balance? A static balance is just that…opposing parts are balanced on a scale and the weights are compared against each other. A dynamic balance uses special spin balancing equipment and spin balances the rotating assembly of the engine much like a wheel and tire would be balanced.

What do I send in with my engine? This largely depends on the engine. Typically, we want the complete fuel system, ignition system and starter to be with the engine. Airframe parts like vacuum pumps, alternators, sensors or special fittings and outer engine baffling should be removed prior to shipment. Most inner cylinder baffling can be left in place. Lastly, we do want the logbook with a removal entry.

What is included with an overhaul? Penn Yan Aero Engines include the complete ignition system: magnetos, ignition harness and spark plugs, the complete fuel system: carburetor or fuel servo, engine driven fuel pump, injectors, lines and flow divider. In addition, turbos, wastegates and controllers are included as are some exhaust parts if applicable. Ask your sales person to be sure.

What are the conditions that require me to do a Sudden Stop / Prop Strike inspection? The Lycoming bulletin numbers applicable to prop strikes are, 533A for sudden stoppage, 240T mandatory parts replacement, and 475C, AD04-10-14 C1 crankshaft, gear, and bolt. TCM bulletins are SB96-11B Propeller strikes and hydraulic lock, SB97-6A mandatory replacement parts. There is also a requirement to overhaul Bendix and Slick magneto's after a prop strike as per the applicable magneto overhaul manuals. (Links?) Basically speaking, anytime the propeller comes in contact with anything other than air and bugs and causes damage to the prop or a drop in RPM requires attention.

What is included in a Sudden Stop / Prop Strike inspection? Penn Yan Aero provides all of the required replacement parts as per the applicable requirements as well as the labor. A test run may be included at additional cost depending on the circumstance.

What is your warranty? See our warranties menu above.

What happens if I have an engine problem on the road and my engine is still under warranty? We will work with any local service provider at your location to get you the service or parts you require, period. No matter where you are in the world.

What’s the difference between mineral oil and AD oil? Mineral Oil is used as a break-in oil whereas the AD (Ashless Dispersant) oils are used after the break in is achieved.

What brand of oil do you recommend? AeroShell

How long do I run the mineral oil? Mineral oil should be run in a freshly overhauled engine or in an engine that has had new piston rings installed for a period of up to 50 hours or until the oil consumption stabilizes.

Do I use mineral oil in my Turbo engine? Mineral Oil is not recommended in a Lycoming Engine. See Lycoming Service Instruction 1014M. Continental has no specific recommendations against using Mineral oil in their turbocharged engines.

Do you recommend mineral oil for breaking for Lycoming and Continental? Yes. However, Lycoming does have specific recommendations against mineral oil in turbocharged engines due to the possibility of turbo coking. This suggestion is not applicable to normally aspirated engines and Turbocharged Continental Engines.

Do you recommend the use of auto fuel? No, under no circumstances.

Does the use of auto fuel void my warranty? Yes.

Can I call for Tech support even after my warranty expires? Absolutely! We are always here to help.

Do you build experimental engines? Yes, on a limited basis. Ask your sales person for more information.

Do you sell used engines with time until TBO left? Not generally. It’s not typical for us to take in an engine that is not timed out.

Do you buy core engines? Yes, from time to time we do. If you have a core you wish to sell, we need as much information as to it’s condition as possible including model number, history, serial number, logbooks etc.

Do you overhaul your engine entirely in-house or do you outsource? Penn Yan Aero, as talented as we are, can not offer all the required expertise here in house. There are certainly some jobs that we trust to other experts in the field. Through our 65 years of building on our experience, we have learned who we can trust to partner with.

Who do you use for your case work? Penn Yan Aero completes almost all crankcase repairs in house. Our experience, attention to detail and exacting standards allow us to offer the most reliable crankcase work you could ask for.

Do you inspect/certify parts without doing an overhaul? Yes, we do offer this service.

Do you sell serviceable/yellow tag/8130-3 parts? We absolutely do sell repaired parts.

Do you repair cylinders? Penn Yan Aero has one of the best cylinder overhaul shops in the world today. We have been overhauling and repairing cylinders for almost 65 years.

Do you sell as removed cylinders? Not really. Often times, we are able to put together a serviceable cylinder as required. Ask the cylinder shop for more information.

Do you outsource your welding? No. Penn Yan Aero was one of the first repair stations in the U.S. to develop a cylinder head welding approval in the 1960’s. Throughout the years following this development, our crew comprised of top notch welders, engineers and machinists have fine tuned our repair procedures into the most comprehensive cylinder overhaul system anywhere. We know what works and we do not compromise.

Do you allow tours / customer visits? We do! We love to meet our customers and give tours. Call us and let us know when your coming and we’ll be happy to meet you and show you around.

Do you remove or install the engines there? Penn Yan Aero no longer offers removal and installation services. However, we do have a number of shops near by that are recommended and qualified by Penn Yan Aero. Ask your sales person for details.

How long does an overhaul usually take? 3-6 weeks. Of course every engine is different due to required parts replacement; availability and manufactures requirements. Our current work load can play a factor as well.

Do you have any fleet discounts, volume pricing etc? We certainly do. Ask your sales person for details.

What defines a good engine core to return? Cores must be as removed, complete and have repairable crankshafts and crankcases.

Why does my low time engine have corrosion? This is a difficult question to answer. Corrosion can have many causes from environmental conditions like humidity to oil condition inside the engine to infrequent usage and even operating temperatures. It is also worth noting that some engine models tend to have more corrosion problems than others.

Why do some parts have corrosion but not others? For starters, these engines are made up of many different materials. Steel parts will rust faster than aluminum will corrode. Magnesium will corrode faster than steel or aluminum given the right conditions. Dependant on the situation, these dissimilar metals can do strange things when given the opportunity. Usage, maintenance and oil can also play a factor.

What does IRAN mean? IRAN is a term that has military origins. It simply stands for Inspect & Repair As Necessary.
